7/25/2023 0 Comments Homeworld 3 railgun frigate![]() As you said it's an immersion-aesthetic thing. Homeworld isn't exactly super realistic, but every ship should have at least a couple small anti missile turrets. ![]() Spot on with Capital Ships having Point Defense Guns. It you might be more inclined to bring a shield frigate if it wasn't only useful 25% of the time, and it having some capacity to defend itself would mean you could also have powerful abilities, and allow counter units to them - eg maybe a vessel that piereces shields to negate the effect of shield frigates, scout frigates with sensors arrays that detect cloaked frigates, disruption frigates that confuse the drones in drone frigates and prevent them firing, etc. You'd get even more if they incorporate the subsystems, err, subsystem, from Homeworld 2, and you could maybe destroy the weapons control subsystem on larger vessels to disable their defensive weaponry.Ī benefit in ship selection is that I think it might make a broader, more esoteric set of ships be more viable for general use. They had a small amount of this in HW1 and 2, but I think it needs a bit (not loads) of beefing up. If there seems like there's some danger to the fighters, it makes it more satisfying to see them defeat it. Seeing tracer fire around a beleaguered capitol ship as it fends off a swarm of fighters is cooler. It makes the ships feel like real autonomous entities rather than just units in a game, because you can imagine them functioning on their own. I think it's first and foremost an immersion and scale thing. Maybe corvettes get a small anti-missile PDA, frigates get 2 or 3 PDAs and maybe an AA gun, and then you get multiple of each and the pulsars or something similar on capital ships, as we saw with the HW2 Battleship. There should be some anti-fighter, point defence against missiles/torpedos, maybe anti-corvette weponry on vessels. It's fair enough if you've a bomber wing that can take out a Frigate, but you shouldn't have a single scout be invulnerable against one. Like Ion Cannon Frigates, or this new Railgun Frigate, shouldn't have 0 anti-fighter weaponry. It would be nice for most ships to have some kind of generalised utility though. It creates more strategic decision-making.
